18+ Reading Support

Description

As a volunteer you would attend the agreed school (usually local to you) two mornings a week 8.45 to 9.30.

The school will assess and identify students who would benefit from this 1-1 experience.

You will have two young people assigned to you who you will see for the entire school year.

Together you will share the reading of a book of their choice which will help to encourage a love of reading, increase their vocabulary and understanding, develop their ability to predict and summarise.

The rapport you develop and the confidence they gain will enable them to benefit and impact positively on other areas of their education.

What rewards come with volunteering, and how does it create meaningful change?

In Kent’s 3rd most deprived ward, volunteers read with inexperienced readers in primary and non-selective schools (to ensure they are able to gain good GCSEs). If you have ever read bedtime stories to your children and grandchildren, chatting about the plot and characters, laughing at the funny bits, sharing anecdotes and being horrified by the sad parts of a story, then you are well qualified to join us. Simply reading twice a week for 15 – 20 minutes has been proven to raise reading ages by one year every ten weeks, and we are raising reading ages by 3 to 7 years. We did not believe it either, but it is true!
