Description
The Good Neighbours Service is looking for Volunteer Befrienders who can offer a listening ear to those who find themselves lonely, housebound and/or socially isolated.
A regular visit, (as long or as little as you can offer,) or a phone call can help relieve the boredom and feelings of loneliness that a person can experience, and it can make a significant difference to their day, week and holistic wellbeing.
You are not there to carry out chores, distribute medication or personal care. You could visit someone for a cup of tea and a chat, go for a walk or do some light shopping. Dog walking can also be needed but again, that is dependent on the volunteer.
What rewards come with volunteering, and how does it create meaningful change?
It is just as rewarding for the volunteer as it is for the client. To know you are maybe the only person someone will see for days/weeks/months is so rewarding. To make someone smile or laugh and maybe take them out for a while will make all the difference. Loneliness is the worst feeling in the world, and no-one should feel like that if we can help. A couple of hours a week is all it takes and you will come away feeling like you have changed someone’s day/week.
Requirements
- Over 18
- Application form and two references required
- DBS Form to be completed (no cost to the volunteer)
