18+ Training Given Young People Youth
Description
Explorers (ages 14–18) is all about independence, adventure, and preparing young people for adulthood. They take on bigger challenges, develop leadership skills, and shape their own programme and to make this possible, we rely on supportive adult volunteers who can guide, encourage, and empower them.
We are looking for Volunteers to join our Britannia Explorer Unit Team. Whether you can help regularly or occasionally, your involvement will directly support young people as they grow in confidence, take on new responsibilities, and discover what they’re capable of.
Our aim is to build a diverse team that reflects the community we serve. We welcome volunteers of all backgrounds, experiences, and skill sets. No previous Scouting experience is required.
Why your contribution matters
Young people in the Explorer age range are developing independence, resilience, and a sense of who they want to be. Having supportive adults around them makes a huge difference. As a Section Volunteer, you’ll help shape the experiences that young people remember for years to come, from planning their own projects to taking part in expeditions, community action, and leadership opportunities.
Your ideas, enthusiasm, and lived experience will help us deliver a programme that is relevant, inclusive, and engaging for every young person aged 14–18 in our care.
What will you be supporting us with?
Your involvement can be flexible and shaped around your availability. Activities may include:

- Supporting weekly Explorer meetings
- Helping young people plan and run their own activities
- Assisting with expeditions, camps, and adventurous activities
- Guiding Explorers through leadership roles and award schemes
- Offering occasional help with planning or preparation
- Helping create a welcoming, inclusive environment for all young people
Britannia Explorers meet on Tuesday evenings, 19:00–21:30, mainly during term time, with occasional weekend activities, expeditions, or events.
You’ll join a supportive team who plan the programme together and make sure everyone contributes in a way that fits their time and strengths.
The 4 Week Challenge – A Simple Way to Try Volunteering
We also offer the 4 Week Challenge, a flexible and low‑commitment way for adults to try volunteering with us.
The idea is simple: as a new volunteer you will join us for four weeks,
each week experiencing a different aspect of what we do, from supporting activities to helping with planning or administration.
At the end of the four weeks, you can decide whether you’d like to continue in a role that suits you. It’s a great way to get involved without feeling you’re signing up for something long term straight away.
What rewards come with volunteering, and how does it create meaningful change?
As a Volunteer, you will:
- Make a direct, positive impact on the lives of young people aged 14–18
- Develop new skills and gain valuable experience
- Build confidence in leadership, teamwork, and communication
- Meet new people and become part of a supportive volunteer community
- Access free training and learning opportunities
- Enjoy adventure, challenge, and the satisfaction of seeing young people grow
Requirements
- Are aged 18 or over
- Want to support young people aged 14–18
- Are willing to work as part of a friendly volunteer team
- Can contribute positively to a safe and inclusive environment
- Are open to completing the required training (mostly online and flexible)
- Are happy to follow our safeguarding and safety policies
No prior Scouting experience is needed — we’ll support you every step of the way.
Confidentiality and safeguarding
As part of this role, you may become aware of personal information relating to young people, families, or volunteers. We ask all team members to treat such information as confidential and to follow our safeguarding procedures at all times.
All volunteers are required to complete a DBS check and the mandatory safeguarding and Safety training before starting in role.
A few practical notes
- The role is completely voluntary.
- You won’t be asked to represent anyone’s views but your own.
- There are no governance or financial responsibilities involved.
- You can volunteer in a way that fits your availability.
