Step into the past and guide visitors through the captivating tales woven within our historic walls. Join our team and be a part of preserving the legacy of Walmer Castle and Gardens and embrace the opportunity to share your love for heritage as one of our explainers. It is now an even more exciting time to join the volunteer explainer team at Walmer Castle and Gardens. We have opened the Lord Warden’s Apartments to visitors for the first time, so it is an exceptional time in Walmer Castle’s history/story. If you love sharing stories, engaging with visitors, and delving into the rich heritage of our remarkable building, this opportunity is for you.
What rewards come with volunteering, and how does it create meaningful change?
A welcoming and enjoyable experience, to be treated fairly and with respect. Recognition and appreciation for your contribution, a full induction and training programme with on-going support. Reimbursement of reasonable local travel costs between home and volunteering location within agreed limits. A certificate to demonstrate work carried out for English Heritage is available on request to show future employers or further education providers. You will be covered by English Heritage’s own indemnity arrangements in respect of all liabilities that may result from your appointment as a volunteer. After 60 hours a volunteer pass for free entry to all English Heritage sites.
Requirements
Provide a warm and friendly welcome for all visitors. Help convey the story of our sites through actively engaging with visitors by answering their questions, telling stories about the house or collection, and helping with family trails. To help preserve and protect the collection and attend relevant training courses and workshops to increase your knowledge of our sites. We are looking for people who, have a friendly, enthusiastic manner and enjoy dealing with people from all walks of life. Have confidence in their ability to communicate well with all age groups, are keen to learn more about our sites. Are happy to be on their own with members of the public.
