Description
We are looking for volunteers to help with landscaping work at our nature site at Hawkshill Freedown in Walmer, Hawkshill is an area of special chalk grassland, worked on by volunteers for almost 20 years. It is a special place loved by dog walkers, joggers, and nature enthusiasts. A great place to sit quietly and look out to sea or stand quietly observing the butterflies, birds, and moths.
If you would like to get out into the fresh air and do a little gardening, then you might like to join us. You don’t need any experience or knowledge; we have expert guidance within the group. There is also no expectation that you will attend every week-It’s very much when you can and want to, and you will be made to feel very welcome.
The volunteers meet at the car park at 10 am most Sundays and finish at 12. It’s a good idea to bring your own gloves but tools are provided, and if we’re lucky ‘exceedingly good’ bakes by one of the gang. It’s very informal and a lovely way to spend a few hours giving something back to the environment and nature, while enjoying the benefits of being outside.
One of the main parts of our work to conserve the special chalk downland, this would include trimming bushes and hedges, planting new bulbs and seeds, assisting with the overall maintenance of the site and looking after the wildlife that call the area home.
What rewards come with volunteering, and how does it create meaningful change?
Volunteering for Hawkshill will bring people into contact with others that think similarly, they will be able to converse with others, learn more on how to tend to the plants.
You may be able to build friendships, get to know new people and just have a relaxing time while working on the Freedown.
This work will also assist on improving the environment around the parish, the plants help with absorbing the carbon in the air as well as giving animals and insects places to pollinate or inhabit.
Requirements
There are no requirements to volunteer, anyone that is interested can come along and help out. Although Hawkshill is at the top of a hill and may require vehicles to drop of older volunteers or those requiring wheelchairs. Tools are available to work with at Hawkshill but you will need gloves.
