Description

As a Female English Support Volunteer with the Refugee Council’s Kent Resettlement Team, you’ll play a truly life‑changing role in helping refugee women and families build confidence, independence, and a sense of belonging in their new community. Language can be one of the biggest barriers for newly arrived refugees, and your support will open doors—

whether that’s helping someone navigate everyday tasks, connect with neighbours, or take their first steps into education or employment. Working one‑to‑one in a client’s home or local community, you’ll create a warm, friendly space for practising English through conversation, everyday activities, and simple, engaging learning tools tailored to each person’s needs. Supported by an ESOL Tutor, Volunteer Coordinator, and Resettlement Worker, you’ll never be on your own—you’ll have guidance, materials, and training to help you feel confident and make a genuine impact.

This flexible, rewarding role is perfect for someone who enjoys meeting new people, communicating creatively, and supporting others to thrive. You’ll help clients learn useful vocabulary, practise real‑world English, and grow the confidence to take part in community life independently—whether that’s travelling to an appointment, speaking to a teacher, or shopping at the local supermarket. Along the way, you’ll develop your own skills too, from communication and cultural awareness to session planning and confidence‑building techniques. Most importantly, you’ll be offering companionship, encouragement, and a steady presence—helping women and families who have been through unimaginable hardship feel welcomed, supported, and valued as they rebuild their lives in Kent.

What rewards come with volunteering, and how does it create meaningful change?

Volunteering as a Female English Conversational Volunteer with the Refugee Council’s Kent Resettlement Team offers a deeply meaningful and personally enriching experience. As a volunteer, you gain a range of valuable skills while forming genuine human connections with people rebuilding their lives after displacement. The role strengthens your communication and interpersonal abilities as you build rapport with clients, practise conversational English together, and support them in navigating everyday language challenges. You also develop strong organisational and leadership skills by planning and delivering your own sessions, supported by the Volunteer Coordinator, ESOL Tutor, and Resettlement Worker. This hands‑on engagement broadens your cultural awareness too, giving you insight into different backgrounds, traditions, and lived experiences. In addition, the Refugee Council provides access to free training opportunities—such as safeguarding, trauma awareness, and specialist workshops—which helps you build confidence and grow both personally and professionally. Through this work, volunteers often gain a renewed sense of purpose, fulfilment, and connection.

Your contribution also creates lasting and meaningful change in the lives of refugees resettled in Kent. Language is one of the greatest barriers they face, and by offering a friendly, regular space to practise English, you help clients develop the confidence they need to navigate daily life—whether that involves attending appointments, speaking with teachers, shopping, or engaging with neighbours. As their language skills grow, so does their independence, enabling them to move through their community with greater ease and dignity. By modelling clear spoken English, introducing practical vocabulary, and accompanying clients to local activities when appropriate, you help them feel safer, more capable, and more connected to their new environment. This not only supports individual wellbeing and integration but can also positively impact entire families, strengthening their ability to settle and thrive in the UK. Your work directly upholds the Refugee Council’s values of inclusion, collaboration, respect, and courage, contributing to a more welcoming and compassionate society for those seeking protection.
