Description
Join the amazing volunteer team at The Kent Mining Museum help bring local history to life!
Our museum is run with the help of volunteers from the local community. Many of them are former miners, bringing a wealth of first-hand knowledge and many a personal anecdote of their time in the mining industry.
However, you do not have to have been a miner to volunteer with us, we welcome anybody who has a genuine interest in supporting the work of the museum and there are many opportunities to get involved.
What rewards come with volunteering, and how does it create meaningful change?
Volunteering at Kent Mining Museum is helping to keep the memory of the Kent Coalfield alive within the community. Our volunteers know that they are helping people understand the industry, and the importance of it, within communities.
There is a friendly team of current volunteers who warmly welcome and train new team members.
Volunteers are given a branded gilet and t-shirt or rugby shirt to wear.
Requirements
The museum is open Wednesday through to Sunday, 9.30am to 4pm, and volunteering shifts are 10am – 1pm or 1pm – 4pm. During school holidays the museum is open all week. There are also opportunities to be involved with school visits and crafting sessions, too.
You need to be friendly, interested, curious and happy to chat to visitors of all ages, some people like a guided tour around (training will be given and there are information sheets and displays to hand).
You do not need to have been involved with mining or the wider industry, but just to have an interest in mining heritage and be keen to learn
